“Provide a group-savings platform to help micro-savings groups pool resources to meet the cost of healthcare for themselves and their families” (Afya-Plan 2019)
idea

Over 1.5 Million Kenyans pushed below the poverty line due to out-of-pocket expenditure on health care annually and 75% of the Kenyan population has no health insurance. AFYA Plan is an e-Health start-up that provides a group-savings platform to help micro-savings groups pool resources to meet the cost of healthcare for themselves and their families. In this micro-savings group, members can easily make weekly or monthly transactions via their mobile phone into a fund phone to save money. This money can be used to pay the bills of group members or to give loans to members in need.

Impact

AFYA plan started in 2018 and within the pilot project in 2019, already 280 groups with 25 members each used the platform. Savings from this group were mainly used to help financing healthcare for example of expecting mothers and births. In this pilot project AFYA plan has also attracted around ten health care facilities and pharmacies to join the platform. The central, honorable and social goal of AFYA plan is to support the lives of the low-income families and to reduce the risk of impoverishment as a result of the high costs of healthcare services. The company has the objective for 2021 to help over 20,000 households to save over 12 million dollars.
